Plant details
Formerly known as R. 'Lord Palmerston', this large, robust variety is just one of a group known as the Hardy Hybrids, the result of crossing R. griffithianum with another species such as R. catawbiense. They are notable for their vigour, hardiness and size, and may be used for large-scale hedging and screening, in the same way as R. ponticum but without the risk of invasiveness. After over a century, 'Cynthia' remains one of the best, a large dome-shaped shrub with conical heads of bright crimson flowers with dark markings. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
