Blackcurrants are easy to grow, bearing masses of dark purple to black fruits in mid-summer. They have a tart flavour and are loaded with vitamin C. Eat them fresh off the bush or use them in pies, cordials and jams. Blackcurrants can be grown in open soil, or in containers.

Ribes nigrum 'Ben Connan' is a heavy cropping, small bush variety of blackcurrant, bearing large, glossy black fruits with a superb flavour. 'Ben Connan' crops from early July over a long cropping season, and can produce more than 3.5kg (over 7lb) fruit per season, for up to 10 years. This variety has excellent mildew resistance and good tolerance to frost.
