Whitecurrants are sweeter than redcurrants, but are rarely available to buy in the shops. The berries are creamy white and deiciously sweet, perfect for eating straight off the plant or using in summer puddings and jellies.

Like redcurrants, whitecurrants fruit well in northern regions. Ribes rubrum 'White Versailles' is a popular early variety of whitecurrant, bearing heavy crops of large, shiny, yellow-white berries from July. 'White Versailles' plants have a vigorous, upright bushy habit.

Grow Ribes rubrum 'White Versailles' in a sunny, sheltered site and prune annually in winter.
