This Chinese perennial produces terrific dark green leaves, to 75cm long, held on stout stalks, with a good show of white or pink fluffy flowers held well above the foliage in the first half of summer. In the right conditions - which means adding plenty of organic matter to the planting hole - it'll make an impressive clump, and it's ideal in bog gardens or damp, shady areas. If being planted in a sunny position, make sure that the ground doesn't dry out.
