Plant details

Found growing wild in Sichuan and Yunnan in China, this tuberous perennial's eye-catching flowers appear in mid-summer. They vary in colour from yellow to purple. Plant tubers 15cm (6in) deep in winter or early spring. Grow in moist but well-drained soil in partial shade. A sheltered position is essential as plants are only borderline hardy. Apply a deep winter mulch to protect plants. To propagate divide plants in spring. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
