Plant details
Salpiglossis is a South American annual that performs best in a hot, dry season. Although reluctant to flower in dull weather, the display of trumpet blooms is spectacular and long-lasting in sunny conditions. The bushy, branching plants carry comparatively large open trumpets in shades of red, yellow, orange, rose and purple, often veined in contrasting colours so that each petal appears to have a central flame or tongue, hence the common name, painted tongue. The Casino Series is one of the best for all weathers. Plants enjoy a sunny spot in moist but well-drained soil.
The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
