Plant details

Holder of the Royal Horticultural Society's prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM), 'Bonica' produces high yields of large, oval aubergines from very early in the season. It makes a bushy, compact plant and is best grown under glass as aubergines hail from the Tropics. Pinch out growing tips when 30cm (12in) high to encourage branching, and stop fruiting sideshoots when five to six fruits have set. Pick fruits before the skin loses its gloss, which is usually a symptom of over-ripeness.
