Plant details
Maincrop potato varieties occupy the ground longer than other kinds, but produce the heaviest yields, often with very large tubers ideal for baking. Whereas earlier kinds are lifted as needed, maincrops are usually all dug up at once and then stored under cover in frost-free darkness; leave on the soil surface for a few hours to dry before storing. Add plenty of compost or rotted manure before planting, to improve yields considerably. 'Cara' is fairly resistant to blight, often a problem on maincrop varieties. Choose slug- or drought-resistant varieties on affected soils.
