Plant details
Although books often call this annual signet marigold or T. signata, most gardeners refer to its simply as tagetes. It is daintier than French and African marigolds, the plants forming spreading bushes with countless branching stems, so the result is a dense mound of pale and finely divided, soft ferny foliage. The flowers are small, but appear in such numbers that the plants are often totally covered with them. The Gem Series is one of the oldest, and still one of the best: as well as 'Lemon Gem', there are 'Gold Gem', 'Tangerine Gem' and 'Orange Gem' varieties.
