Plant details
There are two popular species of this outstandingly graceful genus, both very similar in appearance but one flowering in spring, T.tetranda, while the other, T ramosissima, flowers in late summer on young shoots produced the same year. It is a totally wind-resistant species, often grown as a hedge or windbreak in seaside gardens, but inland it needs some shelter from frost and this can force tall leggy growth which needs hard annual pruning. The foliage is very showy, soft dense and plume-like, while the rich flower spikes of 'Pink Cascade' smother the slender stems for several weeks.
