Plant details

Holder of the Royal Horticultural Society's prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM), the swamp cypress is unusual as it is a deciduous conifer. Each autumn, its pale green leaves turn rust-brown before falling to reveal the tree's conical outline. The green female cones ripen to brown in autumn, while the pendent, red male ones expand in winter. Perfect for waterside plantings, it enjoys moist or wet soil in sun or partial shade. To propagate, sow seed in a cold frame in spring.
