This handsome, midnight-black variety is one of the last tulips to flower in spring. For the best effects, plant the bulb in clusters, or scatter in drifts throughout the garden. Excellent for mass planting, borders or containers. Tulips will thrive in almost any type of soil where there is good drainage. The bulbs require a period of cold so plant before the first frost. This minimises the risk of attack from fungal diseases, such as tulip fire. Any bulbs that become infected with this disease are best thrown away and the ground they were planted in should not be used to grow tulips for several years.
