One of the earlier tulips to flower, 'Christmas Marvel' produces vivid cerise-pink, egg-shaped flowers in April and May. Tulips will thrive in almost any type of soil where there is good drainage. The bulbs require a period of cold so plant before the first frost. This minimises the risk of attack from fungal diseases, such as tulip fire. Any bulbs that become infected with this disease are best thrown away and the ground they were planted in should not be used to grow tulips for several years. Remove the flowers as they fade to prevent plants wasting energy setting seed.
