Plant details
Tulips have always been inclined to develop fancier kinds of ornamental markings, such as splashes, stripes, flames and, in this case, fringes. There is a whole separate classification of fringed tulips, which includes many showy hybrids, most of them behaving like single late or Darwin tulips. Their distinctive feature is the delicately frilled top edge of the petals, often crystalline in appearance and sometimes a different colour. 'Fancy Frills' is an outstanding variety, ivory white with rose stripes and fringe, creating a rich medley of colour. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
