Plant details

The Japanese species V. carlesii is a popular shrub, noted for the seductive fragrance of its soft pink spring flowers, and its fine autumn leaf tints. It is an attractive reliable shrub with a bushy dense habit that makes it an ideal choice for smaller gardens or where strong winds might damage taller plants. Plants are free-flowering, with large heads of red flowers, which first turn pink and then white. The rounded felty leaves are tinted deep purple when they first emerge, and turn brilliant golden orange in autumn.
