Broad beans, Vicia faba, are easy to grow, bearing an early crop of delicious, tender beans suitable for using in the first of the summer salads.

Vicia faba 'Aquadulce Claudia' is considered the best variety for autumn sowing. It bears long pods of delicious white seeds. It has a strong root system and an upright growth habit, growing two-three stems per plant. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Grow Vicia faba 'Aquadulce Claudia' in moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Pinch out growing tips in spring to deter blackfly, and support plants in exposed gardens.

good for autumn sowing and a good early crop. I cover with a cold frame in snow but leave it open a little to ventilate. They taste very good.
