Washingtonias are fine evergreen palms from the rocky, arid slopes of southern America and Mexico. W. robusta is a fast-growing palm with a tall, slender trunk and massive fan-shaped leaves. In warm, costal gardens it can be grown outside but in cooler climates grow as an indoor or conservatory pant. Plant in loam-based potting compost and top-dress each spring.
