Plant details
X Halimiocistus varieties are the result of crossing rock roses, Cistus species, with various kinds of halimium, evergreen shrubs from the Mediterranean. They are generally small shrubs, and like their parents, slightly sensitive to hard frost but an excellent choice for hot, dry, sunny positions, where they flower profusely over a long period. Perhaps the longest flowering season of all is provided by x H. sahucii, a natural hybrid found on limestone in Southern France. It needs gritty, very free-draining soil, and a mulch of grit improves its winter survival rate. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
