Ants

On 16/07/2012 in forum

This year my compost heap has masses of red and flying ants.  I have never had this problem before.  Is it a problem (I don't look forward to turning it)? Is there anything i can do about it or should it be ignored? It is probably too dry -wet it

Ants?

On 21/06/2012 in forum

No, it's not ants, but lily beetles. Look out for bright scarlet beetles and squash them. Their young look a bit like bird droppings as they cover themselves in their own excrement - have a good look for these and wipe them off. Yes if they lay eggs

Ants in my greenhouse

that ants have got in and displaced it. A good soaking can discourage them, or sprinkle ant poison granules under the pot and don't let a pot stand in the same place too long. They can also farm aphids on plants but that is easier to spot than nests in pots

those red ants are evil , when they get you, they really sting. I have colonies all over my garden, black near the house and red from half way down the garden, I don't know why they like my heavy clay so much, they must have to work even harder

On 01/03/2013 in forum

I've got a neglected 'dalek' compost bin, full, very dry, with a colony of red ants.  Clearly I need to start again, and be more diligent, but what do I do with the current contents?  Apart from the red ants, it's mostly spent compost.  Can I spread

Ants in the lawn

On 25/07/2012 in forum

Does anyone have a lawn covered with mounds of soft earth brought up by ants ?  It looks a real muddy mess when it's been mowed.  I have three ants nests in my lawn and a red ants nest right on the edge of the border with the grass. I also have a
