Newbie needing help
to start plating and growing some things, but haven't a clue what I can sow now? I like all sorts of fruit and veg, chillies etc but don't want to go mad first as I'm totally new to it, I’d like to plant some things I could possibly use over Christmas by Darren1976

New year growth starting early
frosts in autumn so nothing that flowered earlier is still in flower. Sounds milder in England. Bulbs just starting to show here and one Christmas rose is out. I think Tim meant to put a comma after his 8C-10C. You are probably right I have got all spring by Tim Burr

What not to grow
small and tough too. I always try to grow brussels sprouts for Christmas but they always fail and I buy them. They worked so well when I lived in Kent! Celeriac.  Massive in the shops, I never grew them like that.  Swedes much prefer to grow in a field by Green Magpie

That's shallot!
to harvest. I'd get them going as soon as possible.  Christmas is the traditional time to plant them. Thanks for the advice. My shallots should arrive today so, Bob I thought I would cover them with fleece for week or so to prevent birds etc attackiing them by Verdun
