Talkback: Autumn lawn care
winter? I'm a strong believer of putting in the hard work of autumn lawn care. If you want a first rate lawn carrying out the long winded tasks of scarifying, aerating and top dressing is essential. I have recently carried out all of these tasks, all by Mark

gunnera manicata
Hi all, i have a gunnera manicata growing in well aerated and beefed out clay soil, the drainage is good, but although i have had the plant in a year and a half, it has never gotten really big, it is south facing but is shaded after about 4pm by rosie plum

Privet Hedge leaves brown and dry
with unhappy bits on a hedge of the same size & would be interested in any advice on growing it to a more healthy state. I have aerated the ground at the base & scattered chicken fertiliser granules. by Kikki20

lawn
Could someone please advise me on how to treat a 30-year old, seriously compacted lawn (on a thin layer of soil). There is a lot of worm activity at the moment, which presumably is helping to aerate the soil. The overall condition, though, is so bad by hortensia4

Ants in compost bin
it down a bit would probably have made them move out - but they're not doing any harm in there anyway.  They were probably keeping it aerated which helps the composting process. Anyway, what to do for now?  Is the compost made - is it crumbly and lovely by lilly3

Lawn maintainace
in advance Nathalie My advice is to stay off it and leave it alone till the Spring-it is getting too late for any treatments and walking on it is doing more harm than good You can still do aerating, topdressing, and feeding then Just ignore and don't look by Pebble Garden

Soil
as you can, wiggling it back and ofrth and then pour sharp sand down the holes to improve drainage and aeration.    Annual mulching in autumnw ith a few inches of well rotted garden comost and/or manure will also help.  The worms will work it in over by George Dyson

Lawn problem
patch to aerate it, before chucking seed and compost (if that's what you decide to do having seen other people's advice). As an "other people" I agree totally with Busy-Lizzie. "nuff said from me. Good luck with it. by steve forbes
