as you can, wiggling it back and ofrth and then pour sharp sand down the holes to improve drainage and aeration.    Annual mulching in autumnw ith a few inches of well rotted garden comost and/or manure will also help.  The worms will work it in over by George Dyson

patch to aerate it, before chucking seed and compost (if that's what you decide to do having seen other people's advice). As an "other people" I agree totally with Busy-Lizzie. "nuff said from me. Good luck with it. by steve forbes

lawn maintenance, under poor conditions
it then pitch fork (aerate?) it tonight. is it then advisable to use a combined lawn feed and moss killer? any other help would definitely be appreciated! thanks. by djjjuk

Cat Poo in the compost !
aerate the heap and should encourage a good compost. You could cover the heap to keep the cats out while it was composting (old carpet, polythene, cardboard etc). by Shrinking Violet

the waistline and bingo wings and much more fun than the gym), gathering up the moss and thatch of dead grass and putting it on the  compost heap, and I am spiking  the lawn as deeply as I can with a fork to improve aeration and drainage.  In the autumn I plan by Tigger Tom

it !  Good luck to yourself tho'. Perhaps tools with a single direction moving part are beyond my scope of experience !  Hi Pete, I do agree with holes left in the lawn but regard it as aeration! I just filled mine with compost and sprinkled  some lawn seed by Highland Jeannie

problem solving
in plastic tray s with holes in for aeration. A Lot of them seem to root or do not perform as well the next year and I do feel them during and after flowering. Would it be an idea to store them like dahlia tubers in dry compost? any help would be much by torsi

by bald patches in summer.  You could try aeration with a tine fork, but I'm afraid you have already hit on the real solution, which is to dig it up, find out what the problem is, prepare the soil properly, and returf.    fazzini wrote (see) I am after by fazzini
