Overwintered runner bans
As I was claering the space from last year's runner beans, I found that the roots had survived the winter and are putting up new shoots.   As you can see, not very spectacular, but it's there! I'm reluctant to dig it up, and have decided to leave by figrat

Overwintered failures
Decided to try some autumn sown and overwintered veg this year. Started off OK with winter cabbage, japanese onions and broad beans. BUT cabbage did nothing and just then all died, onions more than half have suddenly disappeared, and all broad beans by blueberry77

Talkback: Watering plants
Is anyone else having problems with their runner/green beans. Normally by this time of the year they are romping up the canes but this year they have barely grown at all. I have been making sure they are watered but they don't look any higher by Josephine from Wilts

suitable plants for a middle sized put
I have two medium sized pots in a slightly shady part of my garden and would like to know if I could plant a bamboo - I need height to block an unsightly view.  What would you suggest. Ann Pownall Dorset How about Runner Beans  ??  (early so protect by Ann Pownall

Raised vege beds
question is: there is advice now that one should be digging 12" trenches and putting in old newspapers, compost etc for runner beans, but how does this tie in with the general advice that one shouldn't dig raised beds? by gatehill

small veg patch
thanks osso One thing I would always grow are runner and climbing french beans-are dead easy-don't take up much space -cordons or wigwams and always pricey in the shops-but do not start until May at the earliest You should get some other ideas   Aim by osso

what to intercrop with squash?
?  Just wondering as the carrots and beet I've sown so far this year are stubbornly not doing much , despite making repeat sowings etc. I've a salad bed elsewhere and I'm not planning on a '3 sisters' crop tho might stick some beans in there, depending by General Disarray
