pebbles laid over for keep weeds down,this has the efdfect of keeping off rainfall as surface water runs off the sheeting into the tarmac area of the drive.In the last two years the prickly tree about 2m tall has basically become brown and is failing fast by Gardening Richard

into brown wood as it won't recover - leave a layer of green everywhere. Is it a correct season do the trim? They're usually done in late summer to avoid birds' nests, so July-August. Has the gravel been laid recently? It looks like limestone chippings by maggienewgardener

Tidying up herbaceous plants for winter
I'm in two minds about clearing up summers perennials that are now fading from green to yellow/brown. Somebody once told me to simply leave it to provide winter protection for the plant, and the garden wildlife (both good and bad), but I have a by Tim Burr

pampass grass
it to the compost heap. Took a while to rot down but it got there in the end Lol,  I am growing pampas this year, it was either that or bamboo.  I'm not thinking of attacking my bamboo in that way. The pampas flowered so late the stems broke in the autumn gales by gorby

disappointing peppers
My partner has tended his pepper plants in the conservatory like babies all ready for the Horticultural Show.  They looked perfect until he looked very closely only to find deep brown patches appearing on them.   Too late now for the Show, but would by greenmaid

Mother in Law's Tongue
to avoid root rot. The soil from 3 inches below the surface feels fairly dry to the touch, although when I first got the plant, it felt slightly moist.The ebay seller said to cut off the affected leaves, but this seems drastic. I did it on one leaf by TimS

Suggestions of plants for a hedge
their autumnal brown leaves if pruned before the end of July. Hawthorns are also fast growing but are thorny - good for deterring unwanted visitors and protecting birds.  It plays host to lots of insects and has spring flowers for nectar and then fruits for birds by nancyg

new zealand flax
in different years for no apparent reason. The leaves still looked alive but the roots rotted off. They weren't in wet conditions.They do get dead leaves underneath and I pull them off in the Spring. I've got one flower spike on one of the remaining ones by MAGGIE BRAY

Talkback: Potato blight
wisteria all over the back of the house, yet coming from a pot. Any ideas on a type of blight affecting ivy? The leaves are going brown and dropping. The stems are rotting right through. It seems to be spreading rapidly.Thanks My three Japanese cherry by Frances M
