Advice required for low maintenance raised beds?
be my choice.  Phormium would look striking as a centre plant - you can find lots of varieties with red striped leaves which would make a nice contrast with the green and gold varieagated edge.  If it were my garden I would put loads of tall bulbs either by Fabio

Neglected Garden
, including thistle, dandelion etc, and once they're dead, use a long   weeding knife or bulb trowel to get rid of the roots.  If they're in your lawn, fill the hole with a mixture of sharp sand and grass seeds, to fill the hole, improve drainage in your lawn by Dani167

Ground Elder for a beginner
a few established plants.  There are 2 mini trees in it and lots of rose bushes and a fair few bulbs.  The stuff I've read is dig up all the plants, wash the roots, plant them in pots and tackle the bed organically or with weed killer.  I don by Emma179

any idea what it is
in the ground and like ground elder you think you've dug it all out but then back it comes if you've left the tiniest bulb behind.  It spreads mercilessly.  Enjoy it in the local woods and plant an Italicum instead - much prettier leaves and more controllable by trifid house

What is horticultural grit?
I've used sharp sand in it's place, and it seems to be OK - used to improve drainage & keep slugs away from my lilly bulbs.  Maybe you could see if you can use that instead?  I got it from my local builder's merchants, and it was a fraction by Boltgirl
