If you are vigilant you can spot the clusters of yellow eggs on the leaves; squashing them is more humane and less messy! I have to cast doubt on your method, the cabbage whites are foul tasting to birds both as caterpillars and butterflies by Maaike

be useful Over the years I've tried everything to keep the cabbage white off my Brassicas without success. So I've given up with brassicas and concentrate on more rewarding crops like potatoes, broad beans, runner beans, onoins, garlic, peas, sweet corn by j.simpson

Butterflies
whites on brassicas. Agree that squishing eggs much less gruesome than dispatching the caterpillars. I don't get it whenever people say they love butterflies then they destroy caterpillars, it perplexes me. If you don't want caterpillars on your cabbages by Kitty4

Butterflies
today. It was a cabbage white, but made me feel all summery. Hi Coatsworth, it sounds like your caterpillar is a moth but not sure which. Orange Tips food plant is Garlic Mustard or Jack by the Hedge.  As other have said they are lovely butterflies. I by ROBIN ROWLES

covered as long as possible with enviromesh. When the cabbages have reached a good size or they get to big I uncover them. This year they have been caterpillar free but I'm not entirely sure it's just due to covers as there were pleanty of cabbage whites by sandi

You're not alone Joey, this is my first year of growing Brassicas...first the Wood Pigeons got 'em, then the White Fly, then the Caterpillars...I netted to keep off the birds and rabbits with some of that orange building site netting and stakes by joey northwood allotments liverpool

Nettles for Butterflies
nettles because they keep the caterpillars safe from grazing animals. Not all butterflies require nettles. The ones that do are - Peacock, Red Admiral, Painted Lady, Small Tortoiseshell and Comma. Others, such as cabbage white, will use other plants by Green P

Novice veg grower needing help

butterflies lets, hope they come back with the predicted warmer weather. Only seen two cabbage white and they didn't stay long enough to lay eggs. Nettles are a caterpillar food.  Buddlias are solely a nectar provider.    This has been bad for butterflies by flower 7
