Clematis montana problem
I have a new Clematis montana which appears to have had all the bark stripped from top to bottom! The remaining leaves have started to wilt (it has lost most leaves) although they do not show the signs of Clematis wilt. It is grown against a fence by SNAPDRAGON63

New Clematis
of the remaining stems/leaves also begin dying then check out Clematis wilt. All clematis need to be planted as deep as possible. If wilt is suspected, then cut away all the infected bits & it should reshoot from low down, often beneath ground. Oh & disinfect any by Jill Smith

Montana wilt?
clematis wilt, more likely to be wet feet or something nasty in the soil of which yoy are unaware.  Slugs love to lick the bark from clematis stems, once ringed they die down as you have described, certainly a good suspect.  Thank you all for the advice. I by diggingdoris

Why Miss Bateman?
of my clematis has wilt - again.  Monty Don mentioned that the late-flowering types are more robust.  does anyone have a view on this?  i've lost two hagley hybrids, which i'm sad about as i especially love the dusty pink colour.  would there be a late by Wintersong

Is 12 inches a deep enough hole for a clematis?
a tall obelisk I think.. at least 8 foot... I would mulch it to get the extra depth which will help deter clematis wilt, or at least help you to recover the plant should it wilt. by happycottontail

north-facing climbers?
they were in their pot to encourage extra shoots and to keep them alive should the top die back with clematis wilt.  If that does happen, just cut off all the stems above the ground and give the roots a liquid feed of rose or tomato food and the clem by freshairfanatic

Clematis Should I get 1 or 2
can be ineffective if the stone itself gets hot. They should be planted with their crown a bit below soil level, because this helps prevent clematis wilt. They may well need to be gently tied in - they do not twine and although they do have a gripping by blackest
