Talkback: Bark life
Reply to R. W. Gellatly. You probably have the brown or soft scale, Parthenolecanium corni. It usually doesn't do much harm, and because it's the same colour as the stems it is easily overlooked. [...] There's a good picture on the BBC Gardeners by R.W.Gellatly

gravel bed/border ... replace with bark?
with annuals, perennials, etc. using a mixture of spikey grasses, foliage plants like hostas, Heucheras, and annuals for summer colour.   I dont like bark as a mulch.  It blows around and it harbours pests by djjjuk

Fungus?
My damson tree has developed sticky yellowy lumps of  weeping orangey yellow goo. What is it please? Susan Amber-coloured gum coming from stone-fruit trees (plums, peach, etc) is usually a symptom of canker, which is a bacterial infection.I believe by Susan Down

Bark mulch
't have many wild birds!  (or cats for that matter) Hi - I think it's an American "thing" - my D lives in the US so I've seen the bark mulch everywhere there too, sometimes in really strong colours.  It does always look tidy!  I wonder whether it's treated by DavesBonnyLass

small tree suggestions please
for any adv ice, Maggie I would suggest an Amelanchier,  Maggie Pam x North facing aspect may be a problem but try either a laburnum vossii or perhaps one of the smaller varieties of crab apple.  Nice leaf colour on some varieties in spring and autumn by staffsmags

Gypsophila
the way the stems look, colour, shape etc so don't want to bin it. I have a perennial Gypsophilla that I bought last year. First thing I did was an out of season division because I'm cheeky. Well, you don't win them all and I managed to get half results by yarrow2
