Woodlice
I grow carrots in soil + compost in stacked tyres to prevent damage from carrot fly which works well, but increasingly I'm finding the soil the soil riddled with woodlice and they seem to be damaging the carrots towards the end of their growing by wightgardener

High water table: dwarf fruit trees in raised beds?
as suggested by my supplier. As you can see, dwarf fruit trees need to be planted quite deep, so it depends on how deep your raised bed will be. I would recommend you plant them in a pot, in a mixture of compost and garden soil, that way you could move them by Whiteflowers

When to prune Arabis alpina "snowcap"
to prune it and now it's flowering near the compost and at the end but there is a big brown patch in the middle. When it's finished flowering I shall cut off all the overhanging bit. I prune all Arabs hard after flowering. It makes them compact by hollie hock

New bed is on a layer of paving about 12-18 inches deep -help!
, not downwards.  You could try raising the level by adding compost, topsoil and manure, it will all help make your soil more productive. Hi TDM if your in the rear garden you could simply build raised beds,at our allotment we have only 12" of soil so we all raise by tdm

Can daffodils drown?
and compost to keep the bulbs well drained. Part of the leaves only will be the poor light - they will be several weeks behind those in full sun, so there is hope. Not convinced they will do well in heavy soil that floods and in north facing situ long term by Erica68

For whom do we garden .............
, all the bright golden petals.  Then came the squirrels, who dug up the now denuded bulbs, and ate those - I watched them holding them as a hamster does a peanut!!  I am left with a pot of dull brown compost with a few root systems in it to support by Bookertoo

Runner bean quandry
the glass and the blotting paper.  It will germinate and grow. It can be observed and drawn if the children are of a suitable age group. 3 Plant beans in pots - perhaps one per child - with compost and name label + spares so the children can grow them ready by Wendy15
