I've got some hydrangeas in pots outside my front door. They're really tough and only demand decent watering to stay looking good. But this autumn I've been trying to ignore the little white patches of mildew on the leaves. I used to work in a by Emma Crawforth

Clearing a large area of Ground Elder
, many of which are in decline. And ground elder has flat, umbel-type flowers, which are particularly suited to butterflies and hoverflies. So it might be worth saving time and effort and just leaving your wild patch, as it sounds like it is already a by Rose7

Poorly lawn
We have had so much rain here in Essex, ( ha ha drought!) and I have had a problem finding a dry spell to cut the lawn. I managed to do it yesterday as we had a dry morning for a change, but then I noticed these problems. We are on clay here by diggingdoris

planting where path used to be
old tree roots.  Thankfully there isn't any hardcore  (the previous owners have cut corners on every piece of DIY I've found so far) but the ground is very compacted as you said.  I'm going to get compost at the weekend and dig it over properly then by novicegardenerB

Picking kale
http://growcookeatit.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/curly-kale-hero-of-veg-patch.html .  As it says, take some of the leaves from the stems to start with (not the oldest, but not the youngest) that way the growing tip will keep growing and provide you with lots of fresh growth through the winter by CottageGardenFairy

have I killed my Dahlias?
plants recover after a few more days. But these have just got worse. The smallest ones foliage turned a very ashen shade with dark patches in the middle of the leaves and the others quickly followed. Today they are at their worse, most of the leaves by gillybean

how best to reclaim poor land
We have gained access to part of a field behind our garden, which is currently populated with, mostly, Himalayan Balsam, plus brambles and nettles. As a first step, we've had a patch approximately 2 x 4 metres cut down. We're aiming to use this area by gillylal

Conifer Hedge Turned Brown - What Next?
Over the last year or so my conifer hedge (around 60 ft by 10 foot high) has started to die and turn brown (could be the bad winters or maybe the conifer aphid). I’ve started to cut down the dead ones but some bits are still growing and you have a by Nwalch
