fieldfare behaviour
Most years the field fares come through in a flock, eat all the berries, then leave. This year during the bad weather a few hung around under the bird feeders. Now they've all gone except one and it's behaving like a blackbird, chasing everything by nutcutlet

cover or not
soggy rotting mess Absolutely no need to cover at this time of year - although it will get wet, it needs the air, wind and (occasional) sun to dry it off, the frost to make the soil friable and the birds to get at the slugs and bugs (I frequently see a by Alan4711

chickens and slug pellets
growing. I do feed slugs to the girls its very satisfying. Thanks for any advice Mmm. I use pellets and they work great on stopping slugs eating my plants. From what I have read the side effects of birds and animals eating poisoned slugs is negligible by chicken!

Talkback: Plans for a garden
me a few £££'s hopefully. Hi funkywhiteboy. Blackbirds seldom feed from feeders. They are ground feeding birds. They also love berries. Not sure that I agree that bees like single petals...I've had sedums that have been covered in bees to the point by donutsmrs

Talkback: Mice in the garden
, and quite happily while I was gardening. I would feed it also, so it had its only little supply of food so didn't have to compete with the birds. Managed to get a photo of it on my iphone, the mouse standing on the top brick of bbq looking into the patio by Milo de Paor

Talkback: Cabbage white caterpillars
If you are vigilant you can spot the clusters of yellow eggs on the leaves; squashing them is more humane and less messy! I have to cast doubt on your method, the cabbage whites are foul tasting to birds both as caterpillars and butterflies by Maaike

Can anyone identify my mystery plant?
last year and promptly removed it (apparently certain bird feed has hemp seeds in) Could this be echium pininana?   Anyone know why my cannabis pic didn't appear? I've put pics on before with no problem and it was on the screen when I submitted reply by Ldesf0
