basil, chives and parsley
in that pot - chives grow like grass, single strands so don't spread. As they grow on you can simply divide if you feel it is a little crowd. For your basil sow a little less than the chives. Also, basil do not like the cold - grow on in a greenhouse or a sun by David 25

leeks
be worth thinning them out a bit if they're growing very close. You can use the thinnings like chives, or heel them in a corner somewhere and they may grow to a useful size. Then let the remaining leeks grow on a bit until they're big enough to transplant by Moonlit Hare

Planting around Apple Tree
possibly plant something around the tree or would this not be a wise thing to do ? I have climbing roses growing through apple trees, and also honeysuckle. That works, though you need to ensure that the particular climbing plant is not too vigourous by Brumbull
