Talkback: Autumn on the allotment
in this field. I have a patch of about 8feet by four feet. Can you pls advise me how to prepare the soil and what can I plant at this time of the year. I tried to grow some vegetables, but did not succeed excepet cherry tomatoes grew in abundence. Thanks by Kathryn

alwayas used nasturtium flowers and believe you can eat the leaves as well. I am sure that my dad used to use the seeds pickled as "capers". How about courgette flowers - delicious dipped in a light batter and deep fried - I first ate those in France over by Birgit

. They have beautiful wild flower meadows there and one large corner has big clumps of purple iris scattered through it. Purple iris with buttercups at their feet - bliss. Just look for the bull if you can go to see them. is it possible to grow a courgette by Wildman of Pershore

Beans not germinating/being eaten
on as they grow, in these appalling conditions of high winds, torrential rain, clarty soil, and voracious meeces, slugs and snails. I've been sowing them inside and planting them out when they get big enough but all of them have either been eaten by slugs by Lokelani

beds. The defence in part I am sure is due to copper piping attached all around the edge. So, the 20-30 types of vegetables I'm growing this year are safe-ish. One night I did find a brave slug stretching more than double it's body length over by Cathy

it a more suitable home, if it is liable to eat my produce or spoil my flowers. It is easy to grow plants for the slugs and snails which they prefer and then collect them and put them under a hedge, where they will be happy till a predator lower down by Dragonfly

When do you buy your seeds?
seeds starting at 29p a packet and I have always had good results from them. Things like lettuce, beetroot, spring onions, radish, carrot, beans - all types - always grow from seed - dead easy, dead cheap Courgettes, squash, pumkins, cucumbers - nearly by Tina_i_am

What's loving all this rain?
trap and the others growing well . I'm bringing them in at night cos I don't trust the slugs - they seem to be eating everything . Like everyone else though the garden in general is suffering a serious lack of sun. Still no flowers on the sweetpeas by Leggi
