Growing lupins
Hey all. Last year I tried growing some lupin seeds in the greenhouse, but they all died no matter what size pot they were in. They'd grow to 1 inch then die. I pulled one up the once and found some kind of tiny worm (about a quarter of an inch by RubyLeaf

Do these grow through plants?
garden.  What I'm not so keen on is having to stake plants - artjak - does hacking them down mean you don't have to stake delphiniums?   If you don't yet know what will come up in your garden the best advice is to wait for a whole growing season to see by Adam Young

When to plant seeds?
,can't help with the veg. It does all depend on what you want to grow and the space you're going to grow them in. I'm concentrating on biennials and perennials for next year. I've sown sweet williams, sweet rocket, wallflowers, larkspurs & delphiniums. Forget by Mandy2

Success and Failures ...
delphiniums or hollyhocks for more than a year and, for some unknown reason, aubretia. Not having much success with clematis Montana either. TT what about growing azaleas in a container, you could try dwarf rhododendrons grown in ericaceous compost Strange by Brumbull

Supporting plants
and they are discreet. Bamboo canes for delphiniums, short canes for lupins ...for me they produce thick flowering stems that can break in strong winds....and sturdier poles for tall dahlias. However, most of my plants do not require staking and often by Chris 7

too much cottage garden self seeding!
always get them out later if you don't like the effect. Maybe ask some local gardeners/friends if they'd like what you don't want?  If they know they day you are doing the thinning, maybe they could take the baby plants and grow them on?     Try by LauraLoo

Ideas appreciated for shrubs to create structure in my new garden
greens.   Prunus cistena crimson dwarf is a real stunner.  Pinky white flowers on red foliage. I grow couple of half standards.  The foliage colour lasts all summer. A good, similar size and shape is salix .....too late to try the name but it by happycottontail

using ash from wood and brickettes in the garden
. I sprinkle around the fruit and am currently saving a bucket as I read it is  good to dig in a bucket in to a new herb bed which I hope to make this yera. I have also put some around clematis and delphiniums, but that was recommended to do by twinkletoes2

greenhouse vs coldframe
Hi, I don't have much room and I like to grow plants from seed.  Would people recommend I get a small greenhouse or a coldframe?  The only smallish greenhouses seem to be those ones in the plastic 'jackets' and they always seem to break - the zip by cloud8
