buried snails
bird!!! Will invest in the copper, though, for the really vulnerable plants. Might even be worth growing Delphiniums again! I give them to my Chickens.  They love them as a bit of a treat.  Do you know anyone with Hens that would appreciate them? Like by diggingdoris

Perennials not growing
Last summer i planted phlox, delphiniums and ecinacea. The phlox has come back and is about 6 inches tall however, the others have not sprouted at all. The phlox was in a container the others in the ground. I think they might be dead. I would by Louise Boyce2

Slugs and snails
into the soil, then adding 2 tablespoonsful of flour and filling it up with water. A great slug trap she says. I've done one today near my delphiniums. I'll let you know if it works. That sounds like glue to me -perhaps they will have a sticky end by Lorraine Sharp

nearby, then you do have a problem. Perhaps some kind of physical barrier is needed. Growing vulnerable plants in pots or tubs is another solution. Personally I feel that thinking that hand-picking will make one iota of difference to the slug by fraggle84

spring. Consider though what you want form this area, do you want to fill it with perennials or could it be filled with a mix of annuals also. how about growing some of your own food here mixed in with the shrubs, standard fruit bushes can make good focal by CuriousGardener

talking about? You could sow sweetpea now, I always sow in the autumn but again anytime now and I've been growing them for years. Also what about Cornflowers and Calendula, they could be sown now too perhaps. I do have a covered back yard with perspex as a by nodlisab

when is the best time of year to sow biennials such as digitalis, delphinium, and lupins I'd sow foxgloves (digitalis) now, or you can also sow in March/April. Lupins are hardy perennials, and I'd sow in Feb/March if possible, as plants raised from by Sarah, Bournemouth
