How to Cover Ground in the Shade

, a place of contemplation. The grass under the tree, with table and chairs, does not grow much. So what can we do about the bare ground? My first thought is to put paving of some sort down ,leaving a clear circle of soil round the catalpa trunk. I by Lluvia

Tree line

Hi all, Last year we moved into to a "tumble down" cottage so the auctioneer called it (after we bought it) !! Which has a 1/2 acre of garden/orchard with tree lines for borders and fields to all sides. The trees have ivy growing all over them which by Loopster

Philadelphus 'Mrs E.L. Robinson'

I was thinking of growing this in a large tub,mainly because i'm not sure where it's going to end up permanently.Does anyone have one and will it survive ? I should think it would go a year or two in a tub Klink, more if you look after it. I keep by Klink

Are Hostas really for shade?

dry? The shrubs will take a considerable amount of water! When I gardened on london clay the hostas stayed in big pots - far too many slugs! Here they grow with hardy fuchias and epimediums, though the fuchsias are somewhat reduced this year by awful by Beverley Jones

of growing a patch of comfrey to make fertiliser or addd to the compost heap. Phlox spreads too much, not to mention epimedium. I could go on..... Phlox and epimediums are lovely, though, and you can easily dig 'em out! And no one would be without mint by Percy-Grower

HELP !!!!!what about ground cover plants- does it work?

. Thanks Alina W, This sounds just the sort of thing , I will try the ajuga and if this works with not letting anything grow through it then maybe their are other plants that I can go for so I get a good mix I shall scour the gardening pages. Ground by lucky3
