Hi last year was my 1st year growing veg and really enjoyed it but most of the veg I brought as little plants from a garden center.  This year I want to try growing them from seed but have absolutely no idea what to sow and when..\is there anything by flowergirl4

Talkback: Home-grown Christmas dinner
for several years. My husband did most of the back-breaking work but, together, we managed to create some growing space (even using tyres in which to grow carrots) so that we harvested swede, carrots, lettuce, pak choi, herbs and a few potatoes over the winter by Christina

Help me identify shoots please
of it needs to be removed otherwise the root pieces will grow back. the first seed leaves of turnips will be heartshaped followed by more normal leaves. Your lettuces look an ideal size to be transplanted, water well, lift as a clump and then gently seperate by Alan Howard

Talkback: Look at your bulbs
of a more human kind taking your lettuces Sonia, is anything at all left? Have they been nibbled, cut or pulled up? A little forensic investigation may be called for. How big were they? Birds are unlikely to take large ones, but smaller growing plants by Lainey

Stony and hard ground
I would love to grow a few vegetables and fruit but the ground is hard, stony and full of grass, weeds and moss. Apparently it probably has never seen a spade in it's live and neighbour reckons I'll end up with a sore back if I try and dig it over by Chickenmama

Aquilegia Seeds
, they really are beautiful little things. They're better sown fresh, but will grow next spring too. Hi Thanks for the response I didn't realise I could sow them this time of the year, being a newbie.  I see on this weeks diary that it is possible to sow by Chris9

Veg growing inside
net curtain) - don't want to leave windows open wide if I'm out I'd go for lots of different salad crops too as they wouldn't take up too much space and you could probably have a near enough all year supply. you can grow lettuce and potatoes in pots. by Mattwestyorks
