. Domt put manure too near them. It's good to cover onions when first planted ..to deter birds...but when growing uncover. You could add fertiliser in spring but I wouldn't use it now. when you say dont put the manure too near them  does that mean i by karl Grandfield

growing onions from plants
they will be as good as my seed sown ones but better than sets.  not too bothered really about growing huge onions but i understand plants are usually stronger, healthier and more resistant to bolting etc., than sets.  Buying plants will save me the bother of sowing by Verdun

Talkback: How to grow winter onions
I was very interested in the video regarding growing Japanese onions. I now live in Czech Republic where the winters are much colder than in England, -17c to -24c. I will give the onions a go and let you know if they come through unscathed. Thank by navrsi

Talkback: Growing onions: seeds versus sets
I've never thought about the savings from growing from sets. Onions at less than 1p sound good to me! I've been growing "White Lisbon" onions from seeds for spring onions for salad and omelettes for donkey's years, Adam, and, after thinning the rows by LouatLarches
