What veg and salad can be grown in clay-flint-chalk soil?
that also contains chalk. Is there anything that can grow in those conditions? Mainly I've used big plastic tubs filled with organic compost. Depending on the weather, I've grown onions, spring onions, lettuces and radishes. Carrots and parsnips have by Bob Flowerjuice

Shallots first time
I am growing shallots from sets for the first time. Planted out in early April and making good growth. This week flower buds are starting to appear, should they be removed so that all the energy is concentrated in the bulbs or left to mature? Your by Terence Jones

That's shallot!
Verdun, Yes, the shallot bulbs will send out several shoots each and slowly 'split' with usually 6-8 new bulbs forming in a circle, so I grow them about 8-10 inches apart.  Like onions, they're greedy plants so give them plenty of feed.  I usually trowel by Verdun

I give up!
I've got a big, L-shaped, 80cm deep raised bed I built two years ago in my small back yard, specially to grow vegetables.  It has a 2-storey house to the south, and walls all round, so in winter it gets no sun, but in summer is a suntrap, so I also by francesmhendry

how to not attract carrot fly when thinning
crop without  fleece? I sow thinly in 6 inch wide rows, then don't have to thin the seedlings.  I also grow them between rows of onions, the smell of which may confuse/deter carrot fly.  No fleece is used.  There is usually a small amount of carrot fly by artychris
