Clayey soil
well in clay, particularly cabbages and brussels. Don't bother with carrots until the soil has been improved for a couple of years, they just won't grow well from my experience I too have clay soil.  I have found peas seem to do really well. by METAL MAN GARDENER

What not to grow
Every year I decide to try to grow at least one new vegetable, and I have to say I've been disappointed with my recent efforts: Celtuce - bitter green leaves with no point or interest to them. Asparagus peas - didn't thrive, stayed tiny and produced by Green Magpie

Talkback: How to sow sweet pea seeds
Tracey I live in the Coldest North ( Aberdeenshire ) and I've been growing Sweet Peas for years...not for exhibition, just because I love them.  For years I used to fiddle and faff around, soaking, freezing, 'chitting' the seeds; planting them on by Just_Sweet_Peas

sweet peas in pots
There is no room in my little garden for sweet peas. But I'd like to try growing them in pots. Any advice on how it's done most welcome. Particularly, the right size of pot. The seeds which came with the magazine have now germinated . Sweet peas by northchiel

New flowers to recommend
'. It's easy to grow, and great in a patio pot. But what about those you've grown this year? Have you grown any new varieties from seed this year? How did they perform? Would you grow them again? Whether your favourites were sweet peas, hardy annuals by Adam Pasco

Protecting plants from frost
Hi, This may be a daft question but I'm quite new to gardening and have planted a lot of things for the first time e.g. sweet peas.  I'm worried about frosts which have been damaging to some of the new growth on my clematis plants in recent weeks so by Abby2

veg suitable for shade.
. brassicas and spinach, lettuce and it's varients will do ok, but not their best, leeks again will do ok. You can grow lettuces and salad leaves, leafy veg such as spinach, chard, broccoli and brussels sprouts, and peas and beans. But not in full shade, OK by Sue H
