American Pillar climbing rose
experience. I also believe AP is a rambler rather than a true climber.   I don't see why you shouldn't successfully grow a climbing rose on the cottage wall - I'd prepare the soil well digging plenty of moisture-retentive material into the clay which by Ph BB

Rambling rose
I need to move a rambling rose this winter, any advice would be welcomed.  Will I need to cut it down and sacrifice the flowers for next year? Personally I would cut it back. This will help the plant put energy into new growing new roots. by Pam san

Talkback: Rose pruning
this winter and the remaining ones next. Your aim is to encourage new growth to develop from the base of the rose, or from the base of these old stems.Tying stems down towards the horizontal rather than letting them grow vertically is also recommended by Gran_to_be_Ann

Identification
http://www.bluebellnursery.com/catalogue/trees/Lonicera/L/1670 I think the rose is the rootstock that another rose has been grafted onto, and the grafted rose has died.   Did the bloom look something like this?  If I'm right then it'll grow into a big bushy plant but you won't get many blooms.  Far better by Mattbeer87

quick climber i can plant in august?
they didn't grow very high, they did flower last November through to the spring.    This summer they have put on a lot of growth and virtually meet in the middle of the arch now. Can you grow Freckles with roses? I grow a Pair of honeysuckles either side by susannah_c101
