Talkback: Growing salad crops
as bringing different textures.   I also grow radicchio but this year I'm branching out and growing various salad mixes.  I use rocket on its own occasionally but more often as a highlight.  Beetroot leaves are good and pea shoots too.   Baby spinach leaves by patricia nicholls

New gardener new raised bed
Hi, I've read the other newbie posts about their new veggies/raised beds. I had started my lettuce/radish/carrots/spinach from seed on window sills. Following the advice on this site, I pricked them out and kept in doors. Yesterday I built a 1meter by Sinevegas

What not to grow
Every year I decide to try to grow at least one new vegetable, and I have to say I've been disappointed with my recent efforts: Celtuce - bitter green leaves with no point or interest to them. Asparagus peas - didn't thrive, stayed tiny and produced by Green Magpie

Kohl rabi
year outside in a raised bed.  I followed the instructions on the packet for growing outside so did not plant out but thinned out the plants as they get quite big and need a lot of room.  A very useful and delicious veg.  You eat the greens like spinach by Tootles

Sweet peas
produce more leaves (due to the lower light level). Generally I have found no problem growing anything leafy in the shade. (Cabbage, Spinach...) Anything that is a root veg will need more light, as will potatoes. I grew rhubarb in the shade once too by green fingerd will

How To Start Veg Growing
dwarf beans/peas grow well in pots.  In containers, I've had the most luck with salad like spinach and rocket. It's a very rewarding crop as it can be expensive to buy! You can keep taking leaves all summer. We've dug some composted-garden-waste type soil by tony68
