Talkback: Oak trees
beech suddnely appears when oak is felled: the seed was always there, but never got the chance to grow due to oak preventing light penetration. I found an oak tree growing in my garden and at 9 fott too big to grub out, so i just cut it low down and now by desmond54321

Talkback: Adopting hens
and they were clucking, scratching up grubs & laying eggs. The drawback was that they were in love with us and came running up whenever we appeared. If we sat down on the grass they sat with us (and on us) no peace for the wicked! What a joy they are. [Flora May by Brownbunny

Talkback: Seed germination
(unsoaked) on 30th May have done sweet nothing and seeds sown (soaked for 24 hours) in the tunnel 10 days ago have all rotted away.  Why do we bother? Lost 3 haricot vert plants today to the dreaded chafer grubs.  I hate the bu**ers Pippa do the nematodes by Shuv

Symphilids
of cutworms, vine weevil grubs, or any other soil based nasty, but just in case I treated with nematodes and have made repeated applications as per instruction. What I have found is very small white, wrigglers usually around 12cm or so down, under a magnifying by Veg Grower

Bark mulch
naturally be found beneath leaves, and dead bark. Blackbirds in my garden make a similar mess with any compost, or manure, put on the garden. They are searching for worms and grubs.Sparrows and tits, on the other hand, are seed feeders. So they don't bother by DavesBonnyLass

underground slugs
the most damage. There are certainly slugs living in soil but I'm surprised to hear they're eating/killing  shrubs. Slugs cause damage in gardens but this sounds a bit extreme.  Might not be slugs at all-possibly weevil grubs-but again more info needed by Sarah Garrett

weeds!
first I ended up in a Wheelchair (I have ME/CFS), so ANY gardening was out of the question.  Hence the wilderness I need to tackle now! I daisy grub as many weeds as I can be bothered to get every autumn and replace them with bulbs. Gives nice colours by gab82

Red Bugs on my fritillaria imperialis
to get rid of them??? Beetle not beatle Squash them whenever you see them, but have something underneath as they drop upside down and are then hard to see. Their grubs can be seen on the underside of leaves, they wrap up in their poo. Disgusting by Swedboy

Talkback: Fruit flies
. There are lots of predators, mainly beetles (adults and larvae, that feed on the Drosophila grubs. My favourites are the histerids, small (4-10mm) shiny black critters slightly flattened broad rounded globular with thick digging legs to pull through the slimy by Sheila
