Talkback: Growing onions: seeds versus sets
clean. In a spare patch of ground, I threw these down with some other bits and pieces and I have just discovered a crop of onions amongst some annual flowers that had finished.....it was a lovely surprise! I have found more success with seeds than sets by LouatLarches

fast growing climbers
this could be semi evergreen, it was one I grew in a pot before planting out. Flowers June to September, with flowers that are white with a pink centre, I suspect very insect friendly.      I'd use pyracantha - in fact, I have! Its a dense, very hardy by dodo

hard every year. I do this in spring. They can overwhelm other plants if they are not cut back because they spread a lot. I can grow this one in the North of Scotland so this one is pretty hardy. So far my plant is eight years old. The way it spreads by Rainjustlearning

Clay soil problem
manure, mushroom compost bulky matter you can get and dig in will help breal it down.I found runner beans loved it as it retains moisture and has good nutrients. As for shade, foxgloves,hardy  geraniums(not peragoniums), pulmonaria, green hellebores, wild by L0la

Growing Lillies in containers
up as they grow -like earthing up potatoes As they are small bulbs-all the same?-put them in a container say 8 inches in diameter should they be able to see light. i.e dont cover them completely and do i grow indoors? No -they are hardy-need to grow by David 25

I can't even grow from seed!!!!!!!
. I check on the trays twice a day and if need be, water at tea-time. But NEVER at night. This trick has always worked and at times I've had 50 or more trays going at any one time.   Yeah, my hand did get achy. hahaha The salvias are a half-hardy by Bagz

to pinch out or not
slightly deeper? Can you plant out in unfrozen ground and fleece?I pinch out most plants...shrubs, perennials, annuals....and usually repeat a couple of timesI grow cotinus royal purple and Acer flamingo....as examples...and pinch these out mybe 3 times by sthlndngrower

enhance the garden than spend on annuals that simply need to be replaced...and usually for winter and again for summer.I will check them carefully to make sure they will grow well in my conditionsUsually the quality plants have been a perennial joy to me by scotkat
