HOSEPIPE BAN
A hosepipe ban is an emergency measure to restrict water use when it's already too late. A more effective way of tackling the water shortage in South and East England is to encourage rainwater harvesting. A typical family house in the South East by Richard Laker

Veg to sow now
crop next year the sowing now dates point to that. Some of these are quick growers so you could get another harvest this year.  I have just sown my third batch of beetroot and will probably harvest them towards late October, depends on the weather. by Kaitlin De Luca

Red Filbert
filberts but don't know when to harvest them or what to do with them after harvest. I imagine the colour change with the leaves is due to autumn and nothing to worry about. Pick the nuts when the husks are hard, and dry them somewhere warm-ish, sunny by skywoman

Leaf mould vs Chalara ash dieback
dieback I have found in my internet research; is it considered safe to harvest ash leaves for leaf mould? I don't see it as a problem-in the wild they will decompose naturally-despite the disease-in a garden situation you are doing the same by Spider5

Pumpkins
Hi, I was very jealous watching Montys pumpkin and squash harvest. I live at the top of a fairly exposed hill, near Newcastle, it's snowing outside now. Would i actually have any chance of successfully growing pumpkins and squash or do i just by Just Giles

garlic
the end of Sept last year. This is too early to be digging them up.  I don't harvest mine until August. I do think it may also depend on the variety. I planted 'Marco' (I think!) in October. They grew very well over the winter but did develop signs of rust by wood4candles
