problem area in garden
laying down gravel and stones creating some kind of rock garden but i have no idea which plants to use. Rock garden plants would prefer more sunshine throughout the year. You really need to improve the soil before planting up by incorporating organic by amateur gardener

slate soil and slugs
I need help with what plants to choose. each year I spend a fortune just for the slugs to eat, or for them to die because soil is bad I need to know what plants I can buy that will survive both problems Maybe you might consider trying to improve by jackie williams

sand for plants?
with some grit to improve drainage. This will improve the soil steadily and stop it being waterlogged in winter and baked dry in summer. by Daintiness

Ground Drainage
be improved over time, by digging in lots of organic matter (compost and manure) and also liming. Liming causes something called flocculation which is plain english means it starts to encourage the soil to develop larger particles which will improve by Greenfingeredsmoggy

told me it was just a soil improver and didn't alter the ph balance. Never mind, Lyn.  They were probably thinking of gypsum, which can be used to improve clay soils without affecting pH.  The RHS has a pretty comprehensive section on the various types by wrinkly1

idea's please
would start by improving the soil by working in loads of organic such as manure,  and sharp sand, to improve drainage. It will take some doing, and it may mean writing much of this year off getting it right, but once you have done that then you have a by tomalli

clay soil so little choice of plants
Have done what we can to improve the soil in our garden as it is still really heavy clay soil making it hard work. We have some shrubs to keep us going but need more colour that is long lasting and that needs little looking after. Clay soil by Renu
