best fresh compost by sowing old seeds in it. Emma gardenersworld.com team It's always worth giving old seeds a go. Good gardeners never throw anything away! I try them in small pots or on kitchen paper. If nothing germinates, I scatter the rest around by Eileen Peck

have found some of these can be lumpy so I use a garden sieve to get rid of the lumps and to put the thin top layer over the seeds. They are probably taking a long time to sprout as its been so cold. I have had to sow lots of types of seed in my kitchen by diggers2

New gardener advice on growing tomato's please
Hi, I have just planted three seeds per cell in cheap little covered seed trays and sat them in my kitchen window. Then two days later I read advice saying that you should put them in a warm airing cupboard until they germinate and then resite them by Jamjaf

that produces good yields on compact plants. I grow in the greenhouse and my patio.  The fruits are approx 7cm long and turn from green to red. They are good for use in many dishes in the kitchen, and have a medium heat. I pick  two or three strong plants after by patjones

Growing clematis in a pot
I have a pergola in a corner of the garden, but when it was put in. they didn't leave any open ground around the posts, so there is nothing to plant into. I am thinking of planting clematis in a couple of pots at the base of the posts so it can by Tim Burr

winds on 3 sides, I do add water sometimes. I always feel a huge sense of achievement when I empty one out and sieve it to use, though of course it is nature that does all the hard work; I just nip out there once a day with veg waste from the kitchen by TonyCal

Compost heap
At this time of year there is not much dead material to add to the compost heap rather than the weekly grass cuttings, a few weeds and a bit of kitchen waste. I do put in some shredded newspaper and I turn the heap ocassionally but the amount by Rocket60

Are these leopard slugs?
of slug it is, it will eat your plants, so kill it! According to this site (and several others) the Leopard Slug is the gardener's friend http://www.opalexplorenature.org/LeopardSlug  I didn't realise any slugs were useful. Will have to look out by Amy-new-at-this
