to empty my dalek compost bin using a garden fork to prong the contents from the top, I disturbed a very well fed rat who scuttled off at great speed! My mulch was great - full of worms but quite damp - perhaps I should put more paper in? I have a regular by Margaret

water, ok ok not very humane but still quite organic, I am, however loathe to use boiling water on them in my compost bin as there are loads of luverly worms doing all sorts of good things to the compost, and I think I may kill them off as well which I by Jan

Root maggots (I think)
.  Transparent to white worm-like things, will try and get a pic if that helps. Hi Emma, could they be vine weevil larvae? Take a look on a search engine to be sure. These are really common pests of potted plants and can do a lot of damage chewing on the roots by emmarose

in the greenhouse, is that a good place to make a clamp? I had exactly the same thing happen to me,plus I had some lovely big plants,lots of foliage and was looking forward to lots of potatoes from these plants but when I dug them up there wasnt a potato to be seen by Charles Johnston
