Concrete layer in flower bed area - what can I do?
about 5-6 inches down!!!! - so now I'm a bit worried that this area will not be deep enough for a flower bed. I want to have a mixed border with mainly evergreen shrubs, 3-4 azealas /camelias, maybe a hydrangea but also room to plant spring/ autumn bulbs by Newbie Gardener

and flowers around the narrow patio border, which gets all the rain run off and doesn't seep away easily (boggy soil). Any ideas for suitable plants. Are there any that will drink up this excess water? By the way I am a novice so don't answer too technically by antonihoe

Dig up and make new

Can we build a fence tight to a hedge?

Talkback: Growing fragrant sweet peas
-fashioned "Cupani" is my favourite for scent, Adam. Its flowers are a pretty red and purple mix but the scent knocks you over. They are reputed to be the origin of our present varieties and to have been in this country for 300 years. My freebies from the magazine by chrisco

Sharp sand drainage properties
enormous ton bags of sand, no idea what kind, when we enlarged our big border & the plants all seeem very happy. I've read many times since that sand doesn't help drainage, it's grit that does.  Also lots of seed or cuttings mixes I've read suggested half by Grimvood

it thoroughly? I would say you prob have acid soil anyway. You won't have too many,worms in your acid soil anyway...? Why not mix the whole area together? So, you bought normal multipurpose compost for half and ericaceous compost for the rest...? What by jackie-gardener
