Crown Imperials
Just mowing my lawn and noticed a distinctly bad smell coming from tubs with daffs in. Closer inspection, I noticed the Crown Imperials which I planted two autumns ago (September 2011) are finally growing. Can't believe it. I'd given them up by Tim Burr

Strimmer or mower?
-but honestly a hover one is your best option-from a safety point of view- mow down a slope not up it Go for the the biggest one you can handle For me it would be the rotary mower. Never really got the hang of a strimmer. The top of my garden is quite flat by Robathome

Lawn not so good
a rotary mower for very reason you suggest..the cylinder just mowed over the prostrate long blades of rough grass.  I also raised the cut.  My lawn is lush, green and even....looks very good.  It is now a mixture of grasses.....I oversow with dwarf by itsnotmyfault

Clearing weeds from a paddock
the grass looking for any docks I missed and cutting off seed heads (those brownish/red things) and binning them.  Docks are very persistant and, when the leaves are small, hard to spot. For what it's worth, we don't mow the grass short all through the year by andyjp007

Going to try the theory of 2 cuts a week
and good grass stems grow from healthy roots. The most important thing for vigour is not how often you mow the lawn, but the height the blades are set at. You should not remove more than one third of the aveage height of the blades of grass, as this can by BrummieBen

Communal garden - council keeps destroying our plants
to that they will maintain the garden - she must have some paperwork somewhere.  Good luck. Who actually does the 'mowing' and 'weed killer spreading'? - if its the local authority, they may able to be contacted via the relevant dept in the council, but this wouldn by Name Withheld
